When people think about sidecars, they often think about what they are built to do.
Turn a motorcycle into something a little more practical, a little more unusual.
But at Scooter99, we’ve always believed a sidecar can be much more than that.
A sidecar can be a family’s way of exploring the city together. It can be a way to bring someone who cannot ride a motorcycle on their own along for the journey. It can become a mobile café, a promotional vehicle, a conversation starter—or simply a machine that makes people stop and look.
Sometimes, it can even become part of a movie.
Back in 2009, one of Scooter99's sidecars made an appearance in the movie Stay Cool.
At first glance, it might seem like a small detail. A motorcycle with a sidecar appears on screen, becomes part of the scene, and the story moves on.
But for us, it represents something much bigger.
Movies are one of the world's most powerful storytelling devices. They take objects, places, people, and moments and give them context. A motorcycle isn't simply a motorcycle when it appears in a film. It becomes part of a character's world. It helps establish a setting, a personality, or even a particular feeling.
And that is exactly what makes the appearance of a Scooter99 sidecar in Stay Cool so interesting.
One of the things we love most about building sidecars is that there is rarely only one answer to what a sidecar should be.
A conventional motorcycle has a fairly straightforward purpose: you ride it.
A sidecar opens up a different kind of possibility.
Add a seat, and you have space for another passenger.
Open the rear, and it can become accessible to someone using a wheelchair.
Add storage, and it can become a delivery vehicle.
Give it shelves and flowers, and it becomes a flower shop.
Or put it in a movie, and it becomes part of a story.
The possibilities are limited less by the sidecar itself and more by the imagination of the person using it.
That is one of the reasons we enjoy custom sidecars so much. We aren't simply building a shape around a motorcycle. We're building around an idea
Over the years, we've worked on sidecars for very different reasons.
We've built them for families who want to ride together. We've designed sidecars around accessibility and mobility. We've created unusual custom builds for events, businesses, films, and people who simply wanted to create something that didn't already exist.
And behind every one of those projects is a story. Our job is to take that idea and turn it into something that can actually exist.
This is also why we find the Stay Cool appearance particularly meaningful.
A movie is essentially a collection of stories told through people, places, objects, and experiences.
The sidecar became one small piece of that storytelling process.
Its mere placement adds so much to the character of the world that the movie is trying to establish.
And that's something we think applies to sidecars outside of movies too.
The best sidecars don't necessarily demand attention because they're unusual.
They become memorable because they invite events to transpire around them.
They become what people make them. What people need them to be.
At Scooter99, we don't believe in building sidecars just for the sake of building sidecars.
We build them because people have ideas.
Sometimes those ideas are practical. Sometimes they're ambitious. Sometimes they're strange. And sometimes, they become part of stories that reach far beyond the person who commissioned them.
Our sidecar appearing in Stay Cool is one of those stories.
And we're proud that, even for a moment, something we built became part of someone else's world.
